Polyvagal Theory and Its Criticisms - Yasmin Shaheen-Zaffar in Dialogue With Dr Stephen Porges.

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of hosting an event with Dr. Stephen Porges and Seth Porges (Dr Stephen Porges son)  where we explored the impact of Polyvagal Theory and building better relationships.

During our conversation, I brought up the topic of criticism surrounding the theory – a subject Dr. Porges was more than willing to address.

In this short clip, I asked Dr Stephen Porges how he personally navigates the challenges of criticism, especially given the strong reactions to concepts like “neuroception,” a term he introduced.

I was nervous and scared asking him these type of questions. I must say the impression of Dr Stephen Porges for me was of a man of integrity and humbleness.

His response was a thoughtful reflection on the nature of academic critique, the importance of integrity in scholarship, and his hopes for future researchers.

Here’s a short clip from our discussion.

In closing, this clip captures a profound moment that highlights not only Dr. Stephen Porges’ groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of human connection through Polyvagal Theory but also his integrity and humility in the face of critique.

His willingness to engage openly with challenging questions for me reflects his commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and advancing the field.

Personally, this exchange reaffirmed the importance of approaching our work – and its critiques – with authenticity, curiosity, and grace. As a therapist, I find the principles of Polyvagal Theory and a deeper understanding of the autonomic nervous system invaluable in my practice.

They provide a framework for fostering safety, connection, and healing in ways that truly transform lives. I hope this snippet inspires you to explore these ideas further, both professionally and personally.

P.S

On a separate note I also asked Paul Grossman if I could interview him regarding his  criticisms regarding Polyvagal Theory in relation to his paper  – he was unable to offer any time for an interview due to time constraints. Let’s stay curious huh?
